The rusting hulk is a virtual village, complete with one-room schoolhouse, and serves as home to a close-packed community that includes gangs of cute kids, teenagers in love, burka-clad women, and ailing octogenarians. Its de facto mayor is the decisive and boisterous Captain Nemat (Ali Nasirian), who collects rent, dispenses food and medicine (at a price), and metes out justice. His role as either benevolent caretaker or manipulative conman is at the heart of this thought-provoking film. (Iran, 2005, 90 minutes.) In Persian with subtitles.

9.16.06 Screening@HIGH: Bitter Dream/Khab-e talkh
TIME: 8pm
WHERE: Rich Theater
WHAT: Mohsen Amiryoussefi’s multi-award-winning and subtly comic Bitter Dream is a great example of what makes Iranian cinema so vital. An intriguing mix of documentary and fiction, it’s set in an ancient shrine and the surrounding graveyard. The film centers on the gravediggers, masons, and those who carry out the ritual washing of the dead. Boss man Mr. Esfandiar is the head body-washer, whose understanding of arcane religious points is equaled by his ability to predict who will pay full price for a funeral and who will try to stiff him. He’s joined by a slacker in charge of burning the clothing of the deceased; the Imam Hajji Agha, who irks Esfandiar by appointing the lazy young man as his apprentice; and Delbar, a woman with a healthy sense of entitlement who cares for the female corpses. In the Chicago International Film Festival catalogue, critic Mike Hertenstein called Amiryoussefi “a most promising new voice” and observed, “Bitter Dream reminds us that while death is everywhere, so is life, and the choice between them is not entirely out of our hands.” (Iran, 2004, 87 minutes.) In Persian with subtitles.
